Canvas Advanced Techniques: Use the Multi-Tool for Modifying Assignment Due Dates

This service is for faculty.

One of the plug-ins that we have added to Canvas is DesignPLUS, which can improve the quality, consistency and accessibility of course content, as well as provide efficiencies in the way that course content is managed. The DesignPLUS Multi-Tool enables instructors to adjust course due dates in one place, build/organize modules and assignment more efficiently, move components easily, and more.

This article addresses the steps for using the Multi-Tool and the Due Date Modifier to verify and adjust assignment due dates in Canvas courses from a central location.

Turning on the Multi-Tool

If you do not see the Multi-Tool option in the lefthand course navigation bar, you will need to enable it in the Settings area to access the Due Date Modifier.

  1. Click Settings in the course navigation.

  2. Select the Navigation tab found on the top of the page.

  3. Scroll down to find the Multi-Tool option and click on the three dots to the right of the tool name, and click Enable.

Using the Due Date Modifier

  1. Click the Multi-Tool link in the left-hand course navigation menu. (Note: the first time you click Multi-Tool, a message will appear asking for permission for DesignPLUS to access your account. Click Authorize.).

  2. Click Due Date Modifier.

  3. On the Due Date Modifier screen, you can set blackout dates for holiday, breaks and other dates you don't want to have assignments due, as well as default times for assignment submissions. In the Assignment Data section, you can see all quizzes, assignments and discussion forums you have created in the course.

  4. Click the Due Date field next to an assignment to open up a calendar to select the correct due date. (Note that any dates you selected as blackout dates will be grayed out on the calendar and will be unable to be selected when choosing new due dates.)

  5. Click on the box below the date box to set a specific time of day that the assignment is due. (If left blank, Canvas will automatically set the time to 11:59 p.m. on the due date.)

  6. Click the Update button at the far right end of the row to save your selections.

See the DesignPLUS Due Date Modifier user guide for more tips about using the tool. If you'd like to consult with an instructional designer about how to use this most effectively, make an appointment through STELAR Bookings.
