Desktop & Mobile Computing: Legacy Computer Support Policy

In order to keep university computer hardware compatible and functional with modern operating systems and applications, Innovation & Technology Services acquires hardware through a lease program where computer assets are replaced every 4 to 5 years.

In the event that an academic research or business need requires that a computer is not replaced at the end of a lease term -- usually due to compatibility with specialized hardware equipment or software applications -- the computer's lease may be bought out by the user's department to allow a project to continue. Computer hardware that has been purchased from the lease is referred to as "legacy hardware."

As computers age, their hardware becomes less compatible with the latest supported operating systems from Microsoft and Apple. If a computer is not able to be updated to a supported operating system, it will not be able to receive necessary security updates and patches that are required for use on the St. Thomas network. In addition, repair parts and services might not be available for older computer hardware, should a hardware repair be required.

Once legacy hardware reaches an age where its security cannot be maintained, the following statements apply:
  • Internet access from the device must be disabled. This will happen by physically disconnecting it from the network or, in the case where a network connection is required for logins or access to other network resources, by isolating the computer on a restricted section of the network.
  • Computer hardware repair will be performed on a best-effort basis and cannot be guaranteed by ITS.
  • General support, including compatibility with other technology services, will be limited.

Departmental Responsibilities:

For systems:

  • The system 'owner' should make every effort to keep the Operating System on a Non-managed system updated and patched to ensure that it meets the standards set forth by the ITS Security team.

For support:

  • ITS will make a best effort to support these out of warranty systems but there are limits to our abilities to revive systems that are 5-8 years old.  We ask for your patience and understanding when asking for assistance on these systems because of their non-standard status.  If there are costs involved in replacing, repairing, or upgrading the system, the department will be responsible for those costs.
