Office Apps on Apple/Mac "can't edit" Error

Issue

When launching an Office application running on macOS you see one of the following messages:

  • Open a file in an Office program (Word, Excel, Etc) and get a "you do not have permissions to edit...." error

  • Unknown Error 0x0

  • License Not Found

Resolution

This is a known issue documented by Microsoft. They’ve published guidance on resolving it here, but we’ve seen mixed results with their recommended steps, and many students find the process confusing or intimidating.

Based on the cases we’ve handled, the quickest and easiest solution for most people is:

  1. Verify that macOS is fully updated (ideally Sequoia or Tahoe)

  2. Reinstall the Office apps from the web, using these general directions

This approach avoids the more technical troubleshooting steps in Microsoft’s article and has consistently resolved the issue for the majority of students experiencing the “Unknown Error 0x0” or “License Not Found” messages.
