Which wired or wireless network should I use at the University of St. Thomas?

Wired and wireless network access is available throughout campus. Faculty, staff, and students can move around campus without needing to re-authenticate or loss of network connectivity.

Environment

This information applies to:

  • University of St. Thomas faculty, staff, and students
  • Students living in residence halls
  • Visitors to campus
  • Computers, mobile devices, game consoles, and media-streaming devices
  • Wired and wireless campus networks

Resolution

Before You Begin

Important: UST is the preferred campus network for faculty, staff, and students. Use UST Open for visitors and devices that cannot connect to an encrypted network. Use eduroam when visiting a participating institution.

Preferred Campus Network

UST is the preferred wired and wireless network for faculty, staff, and students accessing campus network resources.

  • Sign in with your St. Thomas username and password.
  • Use UST when accessing campus resources and the internet.
  • UST is encrypted, providing additional protection for usernames, passwords, and data.

After connecting, your device can move around campus without requiring you to re-authenticate.

Visitor and Device Network

UST Open is intended for visitors, game consoles, media-streaming devices, and devices that are not compatible with encrypted networks.

  • UST Open is unencrypted.
  • The network provides internet access only.
  • Bandwidth is limited.
  • Devices generally require registration every 24 hours.
  • Faculty, staff, and students may use the network, but it does not provide the encryption available through UST.

Caution: UST Open is not encrypted. Faculty, staff, and students should use the encrypted UST network when their device supports it.

For a device that regularly uses UST Open, navigate to the My Devices Portal to register the device and eliminate the 24-hour registration requirement.

Education Roaming Network

eduroam, short for education roaming, is a secure wireless service for students, faculty, and staff visiting participating institutions in the United States and around the world.

Review the eduroam connection instructions and participating locations before traveling.

Troubleshooting

If a mobile phone, game console, or media-streaming device does not connect to the St. Thomas network:

  1. Confirm that you selected the appropriate network for your device.
  2. Navigate to the My Devices Portal if the device requires registration.
  3. Review the Wi-Fi troubleshooting and device-registration instructions.
  4. Record the complete wording of any error message before contacting the Tech Desk.
