Understanding YuJa Panorama's PDF Remediation Max Add-On in Canvas

Issue or Question

YuJa Panorama Structural Remediation Max helps instructors address structural accessibility issues in Portable Document Format (PDF) files. This article explains how to access Panorama in Canvas and correct common issues involving tags, scanned content, headings, document language, and reading order.

Environment

Resolution

Access Panorama in Canvas

1. Navigate to the Canvas course that contains the PDF.
2. Select Panorama Accessibility Assistant from the course navigation menu.
3. If Panorama Accessibility Assistant is not visible, select Settings.
4. Select the Navigation tab.
5. Move Panorama to the enabled course-navigation items.
6. Save the course-navigation changes.
7. Select Panorama Accessibility Assistant from the course navigation menu.
8. Select the PDF that you want to review.

Tag an Untagged PDF

Use these steps when the Accessibility Report identifies The PDF is untagged:

1. Locate The PDF is untagged in the Accessibility Report.
2. Click Fix Issue.
3. Select a tagging option for the PDF.
4. Click Add Change.
5. Under Update Document, click Apply Changes.

Expected result: Panorama applies tags to the PDF.

Convert a Scanned PDF to Searchable Text

Use these steps when the Accessibility Report identifies The document is scanned:

1. Locate The document is scanned in the Accessibility Report.
2. Click Fix Issue.
3. Select a conversion format:
   • OCR overlaid tagged PDF adds searchable text over the original scan.
   • OCR reconstructed tagged PDF rebuilds the document for improved readability and accessibility.
4. Click Add Fix and Proceed To Review.
5. Review the converted document.
6. Under Update Document, click Apply Changes.

Expected result: The scanned PDF contains searchable text.

Correct a Heading Structure That Exceeds Six Levels

1. In the PDF's Accessibility Report, locate the Structural Remediation banner.
2. Click Launch.
3. Locate the heading element that exceeds six levels.
4. Click the element's More Actions button.
5. Select Edit.
6. In the Element Type list, select a heading level from Heading 1 through Heading 6.
7. Click Back.
8. Click Save changes.

Make the Heading Structure Start at Heading 1

1. In the PDF's Accessibility Report, locate PDF Structural Remediation.
2. Click Launch.
3. Locate the element that should be the document's first heading.
4. Click the element's More Actions button.
5. Select Edit.
6. In the Type field, select Heading 1.
7. Click Back.
8. Click Save changes.

Add Missing Headings

1. In the PDF's Accessibility Report, locate the Structural Remediation banner.
2. Click Launch.
3. Locate an element that should be a heading.
4. Click the element's More Actions button.
5. Select Edit.
6. In the Element Type field, select the appropriate heading level.
7. If the element is the document's first heading, select Heading 1.
8. Click Back.
9. Repeat the preceding steps for each additional heading.
10. Click Save changes.

Set the Document Language

1. In the PDF's Accessibility Report, locate the Structural Remediation banner.
2. Click Launch.
3. Locate the Document element.
4. Click the element's More Actions button.
5. Select Edit.
6. In the Language list, select the document's language.
7. Click Back.
8. Click Save changes.

To set a language for an individual element instead, use the More Actions button associated with that element.

Correct the Reading Order

1. In the document's Accessibility Report, locate the Structural Remediation banner.
2. Click Launch.
3. Drag each element into the correct reading order.
4. Click Save changes.

Expected result: The document elements follow a logical sequence for readers and assistive technology.

Troubleshooting

• Panorama is not in the course navigation: Open Settings, select Navigation, enable Panorama, and save the changes.
• The expected issue is not listed: Confirm that you opened the Accessibility Report for the intended PDF.
• The document structure is still incorrect: Open Structural Remediation again, review the affected elements, and save the corrected structure.
• The scanned text contains recognition errors: Review the converted content before applying the changes.
• The automatic remediation does not produce an acceptable result: Download the PDF, correct it with an appropriate PDF editor, and upload the corrected file to Canvas.
