Instructure has added several "artificial intelligence" features to St. Thomas' "Canvas Core" environment as part of its IgniteAI initiative. These "feature options" are turned off by default, but can be enabled by faculty on a course-by-course basis.

Note that not all IgniteAI features are included in our version of Canvas. The IgniteAI "Canvas Core" features available at St. Thomas as of Summer 2026 are:

  • Question Authoring Assistance for Quizzes: Generate quiz questions based on course content to speed up assessment creation.
  • Search for Courses: AI-powered search alternative to St. Thomas' "traditional" keyword search from AtomicSearch.​​​​​​​
  • Summaries for Discussions: Surface key themes and takeaways from class discussions to keep learning on track.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
  • Translations for Discussions & Announcements: Translate content to support multilingual learners and reduce language barriers.
