How do I print from a Mac at the University of St. Thomas?

This article explains supported printing options for Mac users, including University-owned devices and personal devices. It also includes links to related printing configuration articles.

Before You Begin

Important: Web Print is the recommended printing method for personal Mac devices. Print Deploy is being phased out and should only be used when necessary.

All University-owned Mac devices include the Self Service application, which is used to install printers.

  1. Open Self Service.

  2. Search for the printer using either the 4-digit printer number or printer name.
  3. Click Install.
  4. Confirm the printer is available when printing from an application.

The printer should now be installed and ready to use.

Web Print (Recommended)
  1. Connect to a University Wi‑Fi network.
  2. Navigate to print.stthomas.edu.
  3. Sign in using your University credentials.
  4. Select Web Print.

  5. Select Submit a Job >>.

  6. Select the desired printer or FollowMe queue.

  7. Select Print Options and Account Selection >>.
  8. Choose the number of copies and account to charge.

  9. Select Upload Documents >>.
  10. Upload the file to print.
  11. Select Upload and Complete.

  12. Review the print job status on the Web Print page.
Printer Naming Information
  • FollowMeBlack prints in grayscale.
  • FollowMeColor prints in color.
  • Physical printers are identified by building, location, and a 4-digit printer ID.
  • Color-capable printers include the suffix -C.

Caution: This method is not officially supported by ITS. If these steps do not work, use Web Print instead. Tech Desk support is not available for advanced personal-device printing configuration.

Advanced printing may provide access to additional finishing features such as stapling, tray selection, paper size, and model-specific options.

This workflow includes:

  1. Downloading and installing the appropriate driver on your computer. 
     Note: You may need to research your printer model and find the appropriate drive based on your printer model and computer settings by searching Google for the driver.
  2. Installing the printer through Mobility Print.
    1. Navigate to the Mobility Print site:
    2. Download and run the installer file. 
    3. When prompted, select your desired printer(s) from the list and click Continue. 
    4. The printer(s) should now be installed on your computer.
       Note: The printers will only have basic generic functions; functions such as stapling, hole punching, etc... are not supported
  3. Reconfiguring the printer in the CUPS administration interface to use the manufacturer driver.
    1. Open the Terminal App on your Mac. 
    2. In the terminal app, type cupsctlWebInterface=yes and hit Enter. 
    3. Navigate to http://localhost:631. 
    4. Click Manage Printers. 
    5. Select your desired printer. 
    6. Click on the dropdown menu set to Administration and select Modify Printer. 
    7. If prompted, sign in with your computer administrator credentials. 
       Note: This is not always the same as your UST username and credentials; the user account must be an administrator account. 
    8. Click Continue through the next few prompts until you get to the Modify Printer screen.

    9. Under Make, select the printer model. 
    10. Under Model, find the appropriate match for your printer model. 
    11. Click Modify Printer. 
    12. The printer should now be con figured to use the appropriate driver.

Troubleshooting

  • Verify you are connected to a University-supported network.
  • Confirm you can sign in to the printing portal.
  • Verify the correct printer or FollowMe queue was selected.
  • Try submitting the print job again.
  • Record any error messages before contacting support.
