How do I use YuJa Panorama Structural Remediation Max to improve the accessibility of a Portable Document Format file in Canvas?
YuJa Panorama Structural Remediation Max helps instructors address structural accessibility issues in Portable Document Format (PDF) files. This article explains how to access Panorama in Canvas and correct common issues involving tags, scanned content, headings, document language, and reading order.

Resolution
Before You Begin
Important: Review the remediated PDF before applying or publishing changes. Automated tagging and optical character recognition may require additional correction to produce an accurate, logical, and accessible document.
Access Panorama in Canvas
- Navigate to the Canvas course that contains the PDF.
- Select Panorama Accessibility Assistant from the course navigation menu.
- Select the PDF that you want to review.
- Open the PDF's Accessibility Report.
- Review the identified accessibility issues before selecting a remediation procedure.
Expected result: The PDF's Accessibility Report displays the issues that Panorama identified in the document.
Show Panorama in the Course Navigation
If Panorama Accessibility Assistant is not visible in the course navigation:
- Select Settings from the course navigation menu.
- Select the Navigation tab.
- Move Panorama to the enabled course-navigation items.
- Save the course-navigation changes.
- Select Panorama Accessibility Assistant from the course navigation menu.
Important: The Panorama course-navigation item is intended for instructors and is not visible to students.
Select a Remediation Procedure
Select the issue identified in the Accessibility Report to show or hide its remediation instructions.
Tags identify document elements and help assistive technology interpret the PDF's structure.
- Locate The PDF is untagged in the Accessibility Report.
- Click Fix Issue.
- Select a tagging option for the PDF.
- Click Add Change.
- Review the pending change.
- Under Update Document, click Apply Changes.
Expected result: Panorama applies tags to the PDF.
Use optical character recognition (OCR) to convert scanned content into searchable text.
- Locate The document is scanned in the Accessibility Report.
- Click Fix Issue.
- Select a conversion format:
- OCR overlaid tagged PDF adds searchable text over the original scan.
- OCR reconstructed tagged PDF rebuilds the document for improved readability and accessibility.
- Click Add Fix and Proceed To Review.
- Review the converted document for recognition errors, missing content, and incorrect reading order.
- Under Update Document, click Apply Changes.
Caution: OCR may misidentify text, punctuation, columns, or other document elements. Review the converted document before applying the changes.
Expected result: The scanned PDF contains searchable text.
Change headings that are deeper than Heading 6 to an appropriate level between Heading 1 and Heading 6.
- Locate the Structural Remediation banner in the PDF's Accessibility Report.
- Click Launch.
- Locate the heading element that exceeds six levels.
- Click the element's More Actions button.
- Select Edit.
- In the Element Type list, select an appropriate level from Heading 1 through Heading 6.
- Click Back.
- Review the surrounding headings to confirm that the document hierarchy remains logical.
- Click Save changes.
Expected result: The document does not contain a heading level deeper than Heading 6.
The first heading in the document should be identified as Heading 1.
- Locate PDF Structural Remediation in the PDF's Accessibility Report.
- Click Launch.
- Locate the element that should be the document's first heading.
- Click the element's More Actions button.
- Select Edit.
- In the Type field, select Heading 1.
- Click Back.
- Click Save changes.
Expected result: The document's heading structure begins with Heading 1.
Add heading levels to identify the document's sections and support navigation with assistive technology.
- Locate the Structural Remediation banner in the PDF's Accessibility Report.
- Click Launch.
- Locate an element that should be a heading.
- Click the element's More Actions button.
- Select Edit.
- In the Element Type field, select the appropriate heading level.
- If the element is the document's first heading, select Heading 1.
- Click Back.
- Repeat the preceding steps for each additional heading.
- Review the heading levels to confirm that they represent the document's hierarchy.
- Click Save changes.
Expected result: The PDF contains a logical heading structure that identifies its major sections and subsections.
Set the document language so assistive technology can interpret and pronounce the content appropriately.
- Locate the Structural Remediation banner in the PDF's Accessibility Report.
- Click Launch.
- Locate the Document element.
- Click the element's More Actions button.
- Select Edit.
- In the Language list, select the document's primary language.
- Click Back.
- Click Save changes.
To set a different language for an individual element, use the More Actions button associated with that element.
Expected result: The document has a primary language, and individual elements can identify a different language when needed.
Correct the reading order so document elements follow a logical sequence when read with assistive technology.
- Locate the Structural Remediation banner in the document's Accessibility Report.
- Click Launch.
- Review the current sequence of document elements.
- Drag each element into the correct reading order.
- Review the final sequence from beginning to end.
- Click Save changes.
Expected result: The document elements follow a logical sequence for readers and assistive technology.
Troubleshooting
Panorama Is Not in the Course Navigation
- Open Settings in the Canvas course.
- Select Navigation.
- Confirm that Panorama is included with the enabled course-navigation items.
- Save the course-navigation changes.
- Refresh the course page.
The Expected Issue Is Not Listed
- Confirm that you opened the Accessibility Report for the intended PDF.
- Confirm that the report finished processing.
- Review the full list of identified issues.
- Close and reopen the Accessibility Report if needed.
The Remediated Structure Is Still Incorrect
- Open Structural Remediation again.
- Review the affected elements.
- Confirm that headings use a logical hierarchy.
- Confirm that the document begins with Heading 1.
- Confirm that the reading order follows the intended sequence.
- Save the corrected structure.
The Scanned Text Contains Recognition Errors
- Review the converted text before applying the changes.
- Check names, punctuation, headings, columns, lists, and page order carefully.
- Try the other available OCR conversion format when appropriate.
- Use an appropriate PDF editor if the automatic conversion does not produce an acceptable result.
Automatic Remediation Does Not Produce an Acceptable Result
- Download the PDF.
- Correct the document with an appropriate PDF editor or, when possible, correct the original source document.
- Review the corrected document for accessibility.
- Upload the corrected file to Canvas.
- Open the Panorama Accessibility Report for the replacement file.
- Confirm that the identified structural issues have been resolved.
If the issue continues, record the course name, PDF filename, affected accessibility issue, remediation method used, and complete wording of any error message before contacting support.
