Software: MATLAB and Simulink - How to Install for Home Use

This service is for faculty, staff and students.

Faculty, staff and students have access to the latest version of MATLAB, Simulink, and more than 100 other companion products to support your coursework and research and can be installed on your personally-owned computer. The university has obtained a special license for MATLAB and Simulink through June 30, 2026.

What is MATLAB?

Before getting into the details of downloading and using MATLAB, you may be wondering what it is. Per the MATLAB website:

  • Millions of Engineers and Scientists Trust MATLAB: MATLAB® combines a desktop environment tuned for iterative analysis and design processes with a programming language that expresses matrix and array mathematics directly. It includes the Live Editor for creating scripts that combine code, output, and formatted text in an executable notebook.
  • Professionally Built: MATLAB toolboxes are professionally developed, rigorously tested, and fully documented.
  • With Interactive Apps: MATLAB apps let you see how different algorithms work with your data. Iterate until you’ve got the results you want, then automatically generate a MATLAB program to reproduce or automate your work.
  • Ability to Scale: Scale your analyses to run on clusters, GPUs, and clouds with only minor code changes. There’s no need to rewrite your code or learn big data programming and out-of-memory techniques.

Downloading and Using MATLAB on Personally-Owned Computers

The university has obtained a special license for MATLAB and Simulink through June 30, 2026. All faculty, researchers, and students are eligible to download and install these products on their personally-owned computers or on university-issued computers. In addition, they’ll have browser access using MATLAB Online and MATLAB Drive.

Please visit the University of St. Thomas MATLAB Portal to see a list of available products. To download and use any of these products, you will need to create an account using your given St. Thomas email (not your vanity email address). Please follow the instructions in this MATLAB Quick Start guide (also available as an attachment on this Knowledge Base article) to download and begin using this software.

Training videos and tutorials are available by visiting the St. Thomas MATLAB portal, clicking on “See list of available products,” and then select the product you’d like training on.

Updating the MATLAB license on Personally-Owned Computers
