How do I connect to the eduroam wireless network?

eduroam, short for education roaming, is a secure wireless service that provides internet access to students, faculty, and staff when they visit participating institutions in the United States and other countries. Visitors from participating institutions can also connect to eduroam while at the University of St. Thomas.

Environment

This information applies to:

  • University of St. Thomas faculty, staff, and students visiting participating institutions
  • Visitors to St. Thomas who have an eduroam account from their home institution
  • Computers and mobile devices with wireless network access

Resolution

Before You Begin

Important: St. Thomas members should use the encrypted UST wireless network while on the St. Thomas campus. Use eduroam when visiting another participating institution.

Select Your Connection Method

Select the section that applies to you to show or hide its instructions.

St. Thomas faculty, staff, and students can use their St. Thomas account to connect at another participating institution.

  1. Open the wireless network settings on your device.
  2. Select eduroam from the list of available networks.
  3. Enter your full St. Thomas username in the format username@stthomas.edu.
  4. Enter your St. Thomas account password.
  5. Complete any additional connection prompts displayed by your device.

Your device should connect to the participating institution's eduroam network.

Visitors who have an eduroam account from their home institution can use it to connect to the St. Thomas wireless network.

  1. Open the wireless network settings on your device.
  2. Select eduroam from the list of available networks.
  3. Enter the username provided by your home institution.
  4. Enter the password associated with your home-institution account.
  5. Complete any additional connection prompts displayed by your device.

Visitors without an eduroam account can use UST Open for internet access. UST Open is unencrypted and requires re-registration every 24 hours.

Caution: Do not enter St. Thomas credentials into a visitor's device. Visitors must use credentials issued by their own participating institution.

Troubleshooting

If your device does not connect to eduroam:

  • Confirm that you selected eduroam from the available wireless networks.
  • St. Thomas members should confirm that the username includes @stthomas.edu.
  • Visitors should confirm that they are using the username and password issued by their home institution.
  • Remove or forget the eduroam network, and then try connecting again.
  • Record the complete wording of any error message before contacting support.

St. Thomas members can contact the Tech Desk for assistance. Visitors may need to contact their home institution if their eduroam credentials are not accepted.
