Panopto: Add a video to your Canvas course

This service is for faculty, staff.

Panopto helps you to record, upload, manage, and share video content. It is available as both a stand alone service, as well as being integrated directly within Canvas.

This article will walk you through how to:

Important Note: Any video that was created, uploaded, or embedded in a Canvas course before October 15th, 2020 will need to be re-embedded to guarantee students within the course have access to the content.

Setup Panopto for your Canvas Course

Note: you will need to complete these quick steps for each course site you would like to create content.  However, it is possible to use the same video across multiple courses.

  1. Login to your Canvas dashboard and open the course in which you would like to create or share a new recording.
  2. Find Settings in your course navigation.
  3. Select the Navigation tab.
  4. Drag the Panopto Recordings link into the active Navigation bar.
  5. Click Save at the bottom of your screen and navigate back to the course homepage. You will now see the Panopto Recordings link in your course navigation.
  6. Then, click on the Panopto Recording menu tab that now appears in your course.

Within Panopto Recordings you can now add or create a video that will save directly to your Canvas course and be easily available to your students. You can also embed the course videos in any Canvas page, quiz, assignment or wherever the Rich Content Editor appears. 

Upload a video you already created

If you already have a video file (for instance, a file that ends in ".mp4" or ".wmv" or ".mov") you can upload that video to Panopto in order to share it with your students.

  1. In Canvas, from your course navigation, select Panopto Recordings.
  2. Click on the Create button and choose Upload Media
  3. Click to choose the file(s) you would like to upload (you can upload multiple files at once.)
  4. Once the upload is complete, you can close the window.  The videos will be processed and ready for sharing shortly.

Add a Panopto Video to your Canvas course

Panopto allows for easy embedding of videos. When you embed your videos using Panopto, students can easily watch the video within Canvas.

  1. Navigate to the page, announcement, assignment, quiz, or discussion board where you wish to embed the video.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Select the More External Tools button
  4.  choose Panopto Recordings from the bottom of the drop down menu.
  5. Choose your video from the search window. Click Insert.
  6. Click Save.
 
 

Create a new Panopto video in your course

  1. After enabling Panopto for your course, you are ready to begin creating new videos.
    • Important Note: Any video created by following these directions will be available to ALL students in your class. If you need to create videos for specific students (e.g. assignment feedback), please see our article on creating student feedback videos.
  2. In Canvas, from your course navigation, select Panopto Recordings. You can record a session online with Panopto Capture or Record using the standard Panopto Recorder.

    • If you want to use the standard Panopto Recorder, Click on the Create button and select Record New Session.
