Windows: Importing and syncing with Microsoft Edge

This service is for faculty, staff, and students.

ITS recommends the new Microsoft Edge browser for work and school, for both Windows and Mac operating systems. Edge is built on the same Chromium engine used by Google Chrome, making it as compatible with websites as Chrome is. As a Microsoft 365 institution, we also recommend using Edge to access Microsoft 365 applications online (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).

These days it is very helpful to keep your browser data synced to an account. This allows you to access the same bookmarks, browsing history, and saved passwords across multiple devices. While modern browsers all include this feature, Microsoft Edge allows you to log in using your existing St. Thomas account.

We recommend that users migrate to Edge from other browsers. To help ease the migration, Edge allows you to import bookmarks and other data from other browsers. The instructions below walk through how to import data from other browsers into Edge, as well as how to sign into Edge to sync data using your St. Thomas account.

How to import data from other browsers to Microsoft Edge

If you are launching Microsoft Edge for the first time, it may prompt you to import data from another browser. If it does, follow the prompts to migrate your browser data into Edge.

Otherwise, you may perform a manual import of data into Edge as follows:

  1. In the new Microsoft Edge, go to Settings and more (the "..." button in the top right)  > Settings.

  2. Click Import browser data.

  3. Under Import from other browsers, click Choose what to import.

How to sign in to sync Microsoft Edge data with your St. Thomas account

  1. Select the profile image in the browser's task bar. (Hint: next to the "..." button.)

  2. Select Manage profile settings > Sync Turn on sync. If you see an option to sign in, continue to the next step. Note: If you see Manage profile settings, you're already signed in.

  3. Select Sign in and choose an account or enter your account details. Select Continue.

  4. Select Sync when you're asked if you want to sync your account. This syncs your favorites, passwords, and other browsing data across the devices you use with this account. Note: If you choose to sync favorites, any tabs you previously set aside will also be synced.

  5. To switch to another account, click on your profile image, then add or select another profile.
