The following is a common issue related to Cognos Analytics.
Issue: Attempt to Connect to the Data Source Failed
A User is able to log into the Cognos Analytics production environment in any browser and see the Cognos Analytics Home Page.
The user can then navigate to the report, dashboard, or list and click on the link to run. The report starts to run but then an error of An Attempt to Connect to the Data Source Failed appears now asking for the User ID and Password to continue running the report. The following image is seen:
The user will try to enter their St. Thomas Username and Password but are unable to move forward with running the report, dashboard, or data list.
Resolution: Need ODSP Sign On or Access to Data Source Listed in Error
If the Data Source name in the error is ODSP: The User has been given permission to Cognos Analytics platform and pre-run reports but has not been properly given a custom ODSP username and password. The error is looking for that custom ODSP username/password behind the scenes and fails because it is not there.
- Submit a security service request for a new ODSP username/password for Cognos Analytics.
- It is possible if a new password was reissued recently due to a "lock out" that the Cognos Analytics ODSP username/password has not been updated behind the scene with the new credentials.
- This will activate a flow to ensure the proper access is given depending on needs
- This will allow the user to run any self-serve report they have access to.
If the Data Source name in the error is anything outside of ODSP: The User has been given permission to Cognos Analytics platform and pre-run reports but has not been given access to this specific data integration. The error is looking for a specific security group or custom username/password behind the scenes and fails because it is not there.
- Submit a security service request for access to the specific data source within Cognos Analytics.
- This will activate a flow to ensure the proper access is given depending on needs
- This will allow the user to run any self-serve report available to them from this data source
