This article goes through how to add a librarian in the Librarian Role in Canvas because it is a course role unique to St. Thomas. You can read about adding all types of users to a course through Instructure's How do I add users to a course?
Adding a librarian to the course site in the “Librarian” role in Canvas can help the course instructor and the librarian collaborate more efficiently. In the “Librarian” role, a librarian can:
- interact on discussion boards,
- create a module, and
- create a Resource List
A librarian added to a Canvas course in the “Librarian” role cannot see the list of enrolled students or other protected information such as grades.
How to add a librarian to a Canvas course site
An instructor can add a librarian to a course site in the same way that an instructor adds any other individual not on the official roster: via the "People" tab in the left hand navigation in your Canvas site. Once there, then take the following steps:
- On the People page for the site, click "+People" button.
- In the Add People text box, enter the librarian’s original St. Thomas email address (example: smit1234@stthomas.edu).
- Select "Librarian" from the Role menu.
- Click "Next".
(Canvas will prompt you to confirm, displaying the librarian's full name. If you see the a warning of "We were unable to find matches below..." you entered an incorrect email address. Note that "vanity email" addresses like john.smith@stthomas.edu will not work.)
- Click "Add Users" to confirm the addition.
