This article provides a short tutorial video and directions showing how to embed video directly into a PowerPoint presentation. This technique is useful for event presentations or creating self-running displays.
Embedding Video In PowerPoint Video Walkthrough
PowerPoint allows you to include videos directly in your presentation. This guide covers two common methods:
- Embedding a video file stored on your computer (MP4)
- Embedding a video from YouTube
#1 Insert a Video File (MP4) from Your Computer
Use this method if you have already downloaded the video and saved it as an MP4 file.
- Open your PowerPoint presentation.
- Navigate to the slide where you want the video to appear.
- Select the Insert tab in the top menu.
- Click Video, then choose This Device.
- Browse to the location where the video file is stored.
- Select the video and click Insert.
Note: Depending on the length of the video, it may take a few moments to appear on the slide.
Configure Playback Settings (Recommended)
To ensure the video plays smoothly during your presentation:
- Click the video on the slide to select it.
- Go to the Playback tab.
- Set the following options:
- Start: Automatically
- Play Full Screen: On
- Hide While Not Playing: On
These settings allow you to:
- Advance from the previous slide to start the video automatically
- Play the video in full screen
- Automatically hide the video once it finishes
This creates a seamless transition without requiring extra clicks.
#2 Insert a Video from YouTube
Use this method if the video is hosted online and you do not want to download it.
- Open your web browser and go to YouTube.
- Find the video you want to include.
- Right‑click the video and select Copy video URL.
- Return to PowerPoint.
- Go to the Insert tab.
- Click Video, then choose Online Videos.
- Paste the copied YouTube URL.
- Click Insert.
Adjusting the Slide Layout
If your presentation is in 16:9 format and the video appears in 4:3 format, you may want to:
- Set the slide background to black or a neutral color
- Center the video on the slide
This improves visual consistency during playback.
Playback and Slide Transition Settings
For YouTube videos, some playback options differ:
- Full screen and “hide while not playing” options may not be available.
- To control when the presentation advances:
- Go to the Transitions tab.
- Enable Advance Slide After.
- Enter a time slightly longer than the video length.
This allows the presentation to:
- Start the video automatically
- Advance to the next slide without manual input
Why Use Automatic Slide Advance?
Setting the slide to advance automatically helps:
- Avoid showing YouTube ads
- Prevent suggested videos from appearing
- Maintain a clean, professional presentation flow
