Powerpoint: Embedding Video

This service is for faculty, staff, and students.

This article provides a short tutorial video and directions showing how to embed video directly into a PowerPoint presentation. This technique is useful for event presentations or creating self-running displays.

Embedding Video In PowerPoint Video Walkthrough

PowerPoint allows you to include videos directly in your presentation. This guide covers two common methods:

  1. Embedding a video file stored on your computer (MP4)
  2. Embedding a video from YouTube

#1 Insert a Video File (MP4) from Your Computer

Use this method if you have already downloaded the video and saved it as an MP4 file.

  1. Open your PowerPoint presentation.
  2. Navigate to the slide where you want the video to appear.
  3. Select the Insert tab in the top menu.
  4. Click Video, then choose This Device.
  5. Browse to the location where the video file is stored.
  6. Select the video and click Insert.

Note: Depending on the length of the video, it may take a few moments to appear on the slide.

Configure Playback Settings (Recommended)

To ensure the video plays smoothly during your presentation:

  1. Click the video on the slide to select it.
  2. Go to the Playback tab.
  3. Set the following options:
    • Start: Automatically
    • Play Full Screen: On
    • Hide While Not Playing: On

These settings allow you to:

  • Advance from the previous slide to start the video automatically
  • Play the video in full screen
  • Automatically hide the video once it finishes

This creates a seamless transition without requiring extra clicks.

#2 Insert a Video from YouTube

Use this method if the video is hosted online and you do not want to download it.

  1. Open your web browser and go to YouTube.
  2. Find the video you want to include.
  3. Right‑click the video and select Copy video URL.
  4. Return to PowerPoint.
  5. Go to the Insert tab.
  6. Click Video, then choose Online Videos.
  7. Paste the copied YouTube URL.
  8. Click Insert.

Adjusting the Slide Layout

If your presentation is in 16:9 format and the video appears in 4:3 format, you may want to:

  • Set the slide background to black or a neutral color
  • Center the video on the slide

This improves visual consistency during playback.

Playback and Slide Transition Settings

For YouTube videos, some playback options differ:

  • Full screen and “hide while not playing” options may not be available.
  • To control when the presentation advances:
    1. Go to the Transitions tab.
    2. Enable Advance Slide After.
    3. Enter a time slightly longer than the video length.

This allows the presentation to:

  • Start the video automatically
  • Advance to the next slide without manual input

Why Use Automatic Slide Advance?

Setting the slide to advance automatically helps:

  • Avoid showing YouTube ads
  • Prevent suggested videos from appearing
  • Maintain a clean, professional presentation flow
