Honorlock: Getting Started with Remote Proctoring

What is Honorlock?

Honorlock offers academic integrity software solutions designed to promote fairness in online assessments. Honorlock integrates seamlessly into Canvas allowing faculty to manage their assessment integrity from within Canvas and allowing students to complete their exams without any logins, downloads, or appointments. Whether it’s fully-automated with browser lockdown and more, Honorlock has a solution based on your identifiable proctoring needs. St. Thomas pays a fee per student for each Honorlock exam out of the Office of Academic Affairs budget. Evaluate how you are using proctoring and consider whether the need justifies the expense. We also recommend you review Remote Proctoring Exam Considerations to learn more about other technology and equity and privacy considerations for remote proctoring.

If you are experiencing issues during an exam,

Request Honorlock

To request Honorlock, click the "Click to Request Service" purple button on the top right on this page. On the corresponding form, make sure to include the following information in your request:

  • Course name and URL
  • Approximate number of students in the course
  • How many quizzes (exams) Honorlock will be used for

A technician will enable Honorlock in your class and add an Honorlock support module. In this module, you will find an unpublished faculty support page and a published student support page. You can edit the student support page if you want to add more details.

Install the Honorlock Chrome Extension

  • Honorlock requires the current version of the Chrome Internet browser. It does not currently work with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Edge, Safari, or any other browser.
    • All St. Thomas computers have Chrome installed. To ensure you have the latest version, please check Windows Update (Windows) or Self Service (macOS) to check for updates.
    • For personal computers, install the Chrome browser on your computer if it is not already installed.
  • Install the Honorlock Chrome Extension** which will be required for taking an exam proctored by Honorlock.
    • If you have the Proctorio Chrome extension installed, you must remove it in order for Honorlock to function. Follow the instructions to 'Uninstall an extension' on Google's Install & manage extensions article.

Add Honorlock to a Canvas Quiz (Exam)

After a technician has enabled Honorlock in your course, follow these instructions to add Honorlock to a new or existing quiz:

  1. Navigate to Honorlock in your Canvas course. You'll find 'Honorlock' listed in the lefthand vertical navigation. There, you will find all exams for your course listed.
  2. It’s time to enable Honorlock in your exams! Next to the exam in the list, click the blue 'Enable' button.
  3. Once the exam has been enabled, you can enable the Proctoring Settings of your choice. To enable a setting, simply click on the box for that setting. The blue checkbox will indicate that the option is enabled. Clicking on it again will deselect this option and turn it off.
  4. Next, select the Student Guidelines you deem applicable to this assessment. You’ll notice that there's a list of items you can select to tell your exam takers what they can or cannot do during the assessment. We strongly encourage you to clarify or expand upon any or all of the items you choose to enable in the Additional Instructions section below. These guidelines and Additional Instructions will be visible to exam takers when starting their exam and will be utilized by our proctors to determine what is and isn’t allowed during the assessment.
  5. The next section is the Accommodations section (related to remote proctoring and/or authentication). These will only be visible to the Honorlock proctors. Whatever the accommodation may be, please include the exam taker's name and the accommodation details in this section. For more information, please visit Accomodation with Honorlock.
  6. Last but not least, you have the exam availability toggle. We always suggest you leave this to the “no” option as default, which would respect the exam availability dates and times you set up within Canvas itself. Selecting “yes” here would allow the exam takers to see the assessment listed outside of that preset window you had previously selected.
  7. We also recommend setting up your Honorlock Profile which will allow you to more efficiently set up the Proctoring Settings & Student Guidelines for each exam. This is completely optional though and not required.

**Note: Do NOT alter or distribute to students the "Access Code".

Customize Honorlock Settings

Customize Honorlock proctoring settings, such as:

  • Record Webcam - Records HD video of the student’s face and testing environment using the webcam built into their device or external webcam.
  • Record Web Traffic- Logs and monitors the browser activity in Google Chrome during the exam.
  • Student Photo - Requires the exam taker to take a still picture prior to taking their assessment.
  • Room Scan -Requires that the exam taker show a 360 degree view of their testing environment and there will be onscreen messaging informing them of this. If you are requesting your exam takers show certain items - blank scratch paper, their cell phone being placed out of reach, etc. Use the Additional Instructions Section below to detail out what you’d like your exam takers to do for the Room scan.
  • Calculators - Allows basic or scientific calculator during the assessment. Turning one calculator on will turn off the other.
  • Disable Copy/paste - Prevents exam takers from copying exam content and pasting it outside of the assessment.
  • And more...

Customize student guidelines using preset instructions that will let your students and Honorlock staff know, what is and what is not, allowed on the assessment, such as:

  • Open Book Allowed - Allows exam takers to utilize a physical book or e-book during their assessment. If allowing exam takers to use an e-book, you’ll need to include a link to that book in the "Allowed Site URLs" section.
  • Notes Allowed - Permits exam takers to reference any physical or digital notes.
  • Handheld Calculator - Indicates students can use a handheld calculator but not the calculator on their cell phone.
  • Hats Allowed - Permits exam takers to wear a baseball hat or hoodie on their head during the assessment. Honorlock will always allow exam takers to wear religious head coverings during assessments.
  • Take Exam in a Public Area - Indicates that exam takers can complete their assessment in a coffee shop, library, etc. where other people are around them and noise is present. Exam takers cannot interact with other people in the testing environment. When Take Exam in Public Area is active, Honorlock will not flag exams with multiple faces visible in the webcam.

Common Troubleshooting

  • Proctorio (the remote proctoring software St. Thomas used up until Summer 2023) operated through a Chrome browser extension as does Honorlock. Even if someone has downloaded the Honorlock Chrome extension, if they also have the Proctorio Chrome extension connected, Honorlock will not work. If you have the Proctorio Chrome extension installed (or any other remote proctoring Chrome extension), you must remove it in order for Honorlock to function. Follow the instructions to 'Uninstall an extension' on Google's Install & manage extensions article.
  • Honorlock is requesting a password; what do I do?
    • You do not need to enter a password when using Honorlock. The system automatically generates an exam password or access code that is used behind the scenes during the authentication process. If you encounter a request for a password, ensure that you have completed the Honorlock authentication steps correctly. If issues persist, consider troubleshooting by clearing your browser cache, reinstalling the Honorlock extension, or contacting Honorlock support for assistance.
  • If you are experiencing issues during an exam, please contact Honorlock chat directly through the icon in the exam. Do NOT submit a TechDesk ticket.
