Update: Transition to Honorlock remote proctoring software
Effective July 2023, the University no longer supports Proctorio as its online proctoring system, and has transitioned to supporting usage of Honorlock.
What should you do?
Honorlock offers the same online proctoring features and benefits as Proctorio, and St. Thomas pays a fee per student for each Honorlock exam out of the Office of Academic Affairs budget. Thus, it is recommended to use Honorlock instead of Proctorio. Get started using Honorlock by reading Honorlock: Getting Started with Remote Proctoring. If you have questions about Honorlock or are in need of assistance, please book an appointment with STELAR.
Still want to use Proctorio?
If you would rather use Proctorio with your own funds rather than the University's license of Honorlock, follow the instructions below.
Request Proctorio
To request Proctorio use this service form: Exam Proctoring (Proctorio) make sure to include the following information in your request:
- Course name and URL
- Approximate number of students in the course
- How many quizzes (exams) Proctorio will be used for
A technician will enable Proctorio in your class and add a Proctorio support module. In this module, you will find an unpublished faculty support page and a published student support page. You can edit the student support page if you want to add more details.
Installing Google Chrome
- Proctorio requires the current version of the Chrome Internet browser. It does not currently work with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Edge, Safari, or any other browser.
- All St. Thomas computers have Chrome installed. To ensure you have the latest version, please check Windows Update (Windows) or Self Service (macOS) to check for updates.
- For personal computers, install the Chrome browser on your computer if it is not already installed.
Installing the Proctorio Extension
- From within your Canvas course, select Secure Exam Proctor in the left navigation and follow the prompts to install Chrome (if you have not already done so) and the Proctorio Chrome browser extension.
- You will only need to do this once.
- After this step, Proctorio will disappear in the left navigation bar.
- Proctorio will now be ready to configure for your courses quizzes and exams and can accessed through an individual quiz in the edit mode.
Add Proctorio to a Canvas Quiz (Exam)
Proctorio can be added to a new or existing quiz. Simply click on Enable Proctorio Secure Exam Proctor in your quiz settings.
Customize Proctorio Settings
Now you are ready to select the options that best fit your exam environment. Click on the Proctorio Settings navigation tab at the top of the quiz window.
Under these settings there are three types of options to select from for your exam security settings:
- Recording Options which allow you to collect information during the exam. Instructors have the option of enabling the recording of video, audio, desktop activity, web traffic and visual information from the physical examination environment of exam participants.
- Lockdown Options are preventative tools that put restrictions and controls on the examination environment. They can block access to materials during an exam and prevent unintended exam distribution.
- Verification Options help to validate the identify of the exam participant. When the record video and/or record audio options are enabled, it is recommended to enable all three verification options.
Visit the Proctorio Quick Start Guide attachment for full details on configuring your Proctorio settings and seek out additional help through the Faculty Support section below.
Exam Review with Proctorio
Proctorio analyzes exam videos in real-time. As soon as a student has completed a proctored exam, the video can be reviewed via the Proctorio Gradebook. The Proctorio Gradebook is a post-exam dashboard-styled report which presents any suspicious information collected by Proctorio through the course of the exam. The Proctorio Gradebook is separate from the Canvas gradebook and will be located in the Quizzes section of the course when you click on a Proctorio exam or quiz.
Below is a captioned image which describes features of the Proctorio Gradebook. Proctorio support can help guide your interpretation of Proctorio gradebook findings.
